Addicted

That is, addicted to the power-pop of The New Pornographers Electric Version. It even managed to bump “A Ghost is Born” from top spot on my top 10. This stuff is just infectious. A friend burned me a copy of it at Christmas and added 3 more songs from Mass Romantic. Unfortunately, it doesn’t play on my CD player reliably which means I’ll gladly fork out the money for the actual CD. There’s 13 songs on this CD and I don’t think there’s a dud in the bunch, though I like some more than others. The vocals are pure pop, the guitars just heavy enough. I hope they visit Montreal soon….

  1. Did you see them in February of 2001 at Cabaret? It was a great show, though I was having possibly the worst night of my life, having just gotten off the phone with my girlfriend of six years now sure that our relationship wasn’t going to last until the end of the week. I remember watching them play and thinking, “these people must have had their hearts really badly broken at some point, right? And they’re doing alright…” rather than just enjoying the music. I bought Mass Romantic the next day and listened to it for about the next two weeks, and after that I couldn’t really ever properly listen to it again.

The newer one sure is a slab of gold, though, isn’t it?

    1. Man, I wish I knew of them then. Must have been great at Cabaret! My favourite Montreal venue over my 23 years of seeing shows. I saw Neko Case there a couple of years ago and she completely blew me away. I had never heard her before, but went on the strength of a friend’s recommendation. Her voice filled the room so completely….Immediately after the show she went out front to the merch table and signed autographs. I loved her so much on the strength of that set at Cabaret I bought “Blacklisted” and got it autographed. Good album, but not as good as seeing here live at Cabaret.

The new album is a “slab of gold”. I’ve been listening to it everyday, sometimes twice. It’s like the best rock candy I’ve heard in a while.

      1. Like I said, I was too screwed up to properly enjoy the show at Cabaret, even when my friend Dan got invited up on stage and danced with Neko. However, she’s been awesome every time I’ve seen her solo (Metropolis, Cabaret, Jailhouse, The Liquid Monkey in Ottawa in 1997), and her pre-Blacklisted output is awesome. I very highly suggest Furnace Room Lullabye if you don’t have it already.
